Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes the rapid build-up of skin cells. This results in thick, scaly, red, and sometimes itchy patches on the skin. These areas, also known as plaques, can be found on any part of the body but are most commonly found on the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back.
The exact cause of psoriasis is not known, but it is thought to be related to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. People with psoriasis have an overactive immune system that causes inflammation and the rapid turnover of skin cells.
There are several types of psoriasis, including plaque psoriasis, guttate psoriasis, inverse psoriasis, pustular psoriasis, and erythrodermic psoriasis. Symptoms and severity can vary from person to person.
Treatment for psoriasis can include a combination of topical creams and ointments, oral medications, and light therapy. In severe cases, biologic medications may be necessary. The goal of treatment is to slow down the growth of skin cells and reduce inflammation.
